A SLIP OF THE TONGUE (UN LAPSUS DELLA LINGUA) (ATTO III, SCENA II)

ANALISI DELL'OPERA AMLETO (HAMLET):

THE PLOT OF HAMLET:

Hamlet learns from his father’s ghost that the present king of Denmark, Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, has killed him to marry his wife (Hamlet’s mother).

So Hamlet, who wants to get revenge from his father’s death, decides to pretend he’s mad to succeed. He even refuses Ophelia’s love, that becomes insane and eventually drowns herself.

Then, for a series of unfortunate events, Hamlet kills Polonius, Ophelia’s father, while he was spying on him behind a curtain.

In order to pursue his revenge, Hamlet arranges the performance of a play representing his uncle’s crime. His reaction to the scene confirms to Hamlet that he’s guilty.

But Hamlet can’t get revenge from his father’s death yet, because Claudius organizes a match between him and Ophelia’s brother, Laertes. During the duel, Laertes dies, but Hamlet is mortaly wounded.

Before dying, he kills his uncle, whereas his mother dies because she drinks from a poisoned cup prepared for Hamlet. The tragedy ends with Hamlet dead in the arms of his friend Horatio.

ANALYSIS OF THE WORK HAMLET:

Some critics consider Hamlet, the leading character of this Shakespearian tragedy, as a colder and more skilful politician than Brutus from “JULIUS CAESAR”, but also with more moral doubts. The Danish prince is irresolute, torn by moral conficts, oppressed by melancholy, and full –according to critics- of Freudian complexes.

Other critics see the tragedy as a political drama: the Court of Denmark can in fact be seen as a prison full of corruption, and where there’s no time for love.

The very first lines of the famous monologue “to be or not to be” are a sum of the conflicts that are tearing Hamlet apart. In it, he’s wondering if it’s better to be a real man or a “nobody”, to live or to die, to kill or to give up and suffer.

Since he's not referring to any particular event of his life, these words can assume a general meaning. The main theme of the monologue seems to be death. Hamlet tries to soften death’s terrible image by comparing it to sleep. Unlike Brutus, who saw suicide as an escape, Hamlet refuses death. However, in the end, he becomes an ambassador of death himself.

When Ophelia appears, and the monologue is interrupted, Hamlet pretends to be mad again, because he understands that their meeting has been pre-arranged by Polonius and Claudius.

There are lots of hidden meanings in what Hamlet says, meanings that Ophelia can’t understand. Here are just a few examples:

1) Hamlet says: “I never gave you anything”, because now he’s a different person.

2)Are you honest?”, Hamlet asks this because, disgusted by his mother’s behaviour, thinks that love does not exist and therefore he can’t be loved by Ophelia.

3) Pretending to be talking to the girl, Hamlet is actually speaking to Polonius and Claudius.

4) Playing the fool also gives him the possibility to say what he wants without any risks.

THE STORY (IN ENGLISH) OF MACBETH:

The main character is Macbeth, the cousin of Duncan King of Scotland. Macbeth is foretold by three witches that he will become King of Scotland.

So, one night, when Duncan is in their castle, his ambitious wife (Lady Macbeth) makes him kill Duncan to take his place, managing to blame two guards and Ducan's two sons for the murder.

But the witches had also predicted that the descendants of his friend Banquo would become king after him. Then Macbeth kills him, and also the family of Macduff, one of his worst enemies.

Lady Macbeth gets insane, and often dreams that there is blood on her hands. So she kills herself.
Macbeth is attacked by a coalition of English and Scottish nobles. During the battle, he is killed by Macduff, and Malcolm (the elder son of Duncan) is restored to the throne of Scotland.

SONNETS (SONETTI) OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

VERSIONE ITALIANA:

ENGLISH VERSION:

Shakespeare wrote a lot of sonnets in his life, about 154. They show us his sensitive and romantic heart, experiences and emotions.

There are lots of difficulties of interpretation in them, that critics try to solve.
The first part of them is dedicated to a “fair youth”, that's probably the Earl of Southampton. The second to the mysterious “dark lady”, probably a woman loved by Shakespeare, that then he had left, because he had realized her love for him was not so strong.

QUI DI SEGUITO E' POSSIBILE LEGGERE L'ANALISI (IN ITALIANO E IN INGLESE) E LA TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO DI TRE FRA I PIU' FAMOSI SONETTI DI SHAKESPEARE:

SONETTO XVIII: Shall I compare thee

SONETTO LXXI: No longer mourn

SONETTO CXXX: My mistress' eyes

SONETTO XVIII DI WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow rest.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

The poet wonders if he can compare his young friend to a summer day, but then he realizes he’s more “lovely” and more “temperate”. He is in fact not "shaken by rough winds”, or “burned by the sun”. And his sweetness lasts longer than summer, that declines in autumn. This is the destiny of every fair thing.
Instead, his young friend’s beauty will not fade, not die, and this sonnet will make him live after death (“as long as men can breath or eyes can see”).
The comparison between man’s beauty and the beauty of nature is a classic theme.

SONETTO XXLI DI WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

No longer mourn for me when I am dead
Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell
Give warning to the world that I am fled
From this vile world with vilest worms to dwell:
Nay, if you read this line, remember not
The hand that writ it, for I love you so,
That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot,
If thinking on me then should make you woe.
O! if, I say, you look upon this verse,
When I perhaps compounded am with clay,
Do not so much as my poor name rehearse;
But let your love even with my life decay;
Lest the wise world should look into your moan,
And mock you with me after I am gone.

This is a very sad sonnet: Shakespeare knows that when a man dies, he’s soon forgotten. In this sonnet he tells his young friend to cry for him only until he hears the bell that announces his death, because he prefers being forgotten rather than making him suffer. In fact, he loves him very much. But he’ll also have to forget his name, because, if he shows his pain too much, he could be mocked by those people that can’t appreciate a sensitive heart.

SONETTO CXXX DI WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red, than her lips red:
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound:
I grant I never saw a goddess go,
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet by heaven, I think my love as rare,
As any she belied with false compare.

TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO DEL SONETTO CXXX DI WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE:

Gli occhi della mia signora non sono per niente come il sole;
Il corallo è molto più rosso del suo labbro;
Se la neve è bianca, be’ allora il suo seno è grigiastro;
Se i capelli sono fili, fili neri crescono sulla sua testa;
Io ho visto rose damascate, rosse e bianche,
Ma non simili rose vedo sulle sue guance;
