DIVISIONE DELLE PAROLE IN INGLESE

In inglese vi sono regole di divisione delle parole diverse rispetto all'italiano.

In italiano, per esempio, le sillabe sono più facilmente individuabili e divisibili che in inglese, e le parole possono perciò essere facilmente spezzate seguendo la divisione sillabica.

ES.  fa/cil/men/te

In English the rules for dividing words are different than in Italian.

In Italian, for example, syllables are more easily identifiable and divisible than in English, and words can therefore be easily divided following the syllabic division.

E.G. fa/cil/men/te
    sil/la/ba/re

In English, however, the division of words is not based on the division into syllables, but follows other types of rules. Also because, as there are vowels that are not pronounced, identifying the syllables is more complicated in English.

E.G. love

Even though there are two vowels, "love" is actually monosyllabic in its pronunciation, because the final “e” is silent.

In general, we can say that the English language doesn't like to split words very much. Therefore, if a word were to be broken at the end of a line, it is not uncommon for Anglo-Saxons to write it all on the following line.

Otherwise, different division rules from Italian must be followed, which are the following.

REGOLE DI DIVISIONE DELLE PAROLE IN INGLESE

1. When dividing words in English, you should never break a word so that a syllable of only two letters remains at the end of the line. Instead, the syllable at the end of the line must contain enough letters for the word to be recognisable.

This rule can be understood much better through an example:

SPECIALITYSPE-CIALITY and not SPECIAL-ITY

2. When dividing words in English, bisyllabic and monosyllabic words are usually never divided.

3. If the word has a suffix or prefix (see the page “SUFFISSI E PREFISSI INGLESI” of the website), this can be separated from the rest of the word.

UN-ABLE

BEAUTI-FUL

Compound words can be divided in the same way.

However, in American English it is not uncommon to also find a division of words based on syllables:

IMMORTALIM-MOR-TAL/ IM-MORT-AL

In English the division into syllables follows different rules from Italian, which we will not discuss here, as they are rather complex and not without exceptions.
